When I was looking for a teacher, I didn’t want just any “native speaker”. I only wanted a British one. That was my prerequisite. You may not realize it but many of your students choose you (mainly) because of that, too. Your students chose you because they want to speak like you. And this is exactly WHY you should add a pronunciation course to your offer.
How my chinese studies helped me… switch to British English.
When I was switching to British English, I didn’t have a guide. But I had had experience learning Chinese, having studied it at uni. I remembered the first few days of lectures.
We didn’t start by saying full sentences such as: “Hi, how are you doing?”
We started by learning to pronounce separate sounds. No meaning yet. No words yet. Just clear pronunciation. We covered all sounds combinations and the four tones in standard Chinese. And if you’re not familiar with Chinese, I’ll just tell you that many of them sound almost the same, and you need to pay attention because instead of “comfortable”, you may say… “release poop”.
I decided that if it takes learning just a few sounds in Chinese, it should work with any language. Each language must have a limited numbers of sound combinations. So I started to explore the sounds of British English, one by one.
What’s the takeaway of this story?
I hadn’t realized how easy it was to learn correct pronunciation. I had just assumed the British accent sounded so beautiful, it must be difficult. I had assumed if it was that easy, at least one of the teachers would have already taught me that. And many of your students may think the same. Even you may think the same, because you don’t know where to start.
So, How can you start offering pronunciation workshops?
I did that part for you. I assembled together a set of 59 cards that can be used as a stand-alone Pronunciation Course or you can incorporate them into your usual lessons, for example dedicating the first 10 minutes of a lesson to pronunciation. These cards are what I wish I could have used to teach myself and to teach others. They focus on the most important factors that will instantly improve your students’ pronunciation.
Let’s take a peek:

Are you British? Use your “unfair advantage”. You didn’t earn it, but you can earn on it.
People feel they don’t deserve to earn money on something that they didn’t put effort it. If you’re a native speaker, you may feel that way. But instead, look at it as a lucky gift. And it’s one that can bring great value to other people, and also pays rent for yourself.
If you’re a native British speaker, you may not be aware of what challenges ESL students face. You may not know which sounds they should focus on in the first step.
I’ve walked that path myself. And I’m offering you a ready-to-use structure: British English Pronunciation Guide for Busy People. What makes it practical to use for “busy people”?
One purchase = Pays off within the first lesson
Remember: One of the main reasons students choose you as their teacher is your clear, natural British accent. Whether you’re a native speaker or have worked hard to master a polished British sound, your pronunciation is part of what makes you stand out.
